Interwar Peak (1918–1945) · Waffle Iron
Used price$150–$280live on eBay
Griswold's American and New American No. 8 waffle irons are round stovetop irons: two hinged paddles with a conventional square-grid waffle pattern, turning in a base ring that sits over a stove-lid opening. The New American paddles are marked with patent dates of May 1901 and pattern numbers 976/977; the later American paddles carry a December 1, 1908 patent date and pattern numbers 885/886. Bases come low (pattern 975 is the common low base) or high. Treat it as a three-part purchase: two paddles from the same model, a hinge that closes the paddles flat without slop, and the base. Ask for photos of both inside faces, the hinge and the base, and ask outright whether the base is included — many titles don't say. Check each paddle and the base ring for cracks, check that the hinge pin and pivot aren't cracked or seized with rust, and expect wire coil or wooden handles to be replaced or missing. Heart-shaped irons in the same search are Griswold's separate Heart & Star model (or other makers), not the American.
Common defects to inspect
Missing base; paddles from different models; cracked paddle or base ring; worn, loose or seized hinge; missing or replaced handles; Heart & Star and private-label irons mislisted as the American
Note: Most complete irons ask about $150–280 delivered. Paddles without a base are worth noticeably less.
How to identify a real Griswold
Erie-era pieces carry the Griswold cross-in-double-circle with ERIE, PA (U.S.A.) — large block logo pans fill much of the bottom, small block logo pans have a small stamp near the centre — or, before about 1907, just ERIE and a size number. A pattern number (for example 704 on a No. 8 skillet) usually sits near the handle, often with a mold letter. Griswold-branded pieces without ERIE in the mark were generally made in Sidney, Ohio, after 1957. Reproductions tend to show rough, unmilled surfaces and blurred lettering.
Buying guide
From Oct 1, 2026 listings
28 Griswold American and New American No. 8 waffle irons were listed at the late-September check, mostly $150–280 delivered. It's a three-part buy: two matching paddles (885/886 on the American, 976/977 on the New American) plus the base, low (975) or high. Many titles don't say whether the base is included, so ask, and ask for photos of the hinge and both inside faces. The heart-shaped irons in the same search were Griswold Heart & Star and Alfred Andresen irons, not the American, and ask more; Puritan, HS&B and Rey-o-Noc private-label irons were left out too. Cooks: the restored low-base iron; collectors: the old-style high base.

About $68 delivered, Buy It Now, from a 99.5% seller, a New American with the 1901 patent. The title doesn't mention the base, and an iron missing its base is worth a third less, so confirm both paddles and the base are included.

For the waffle-iron hinge pivot — a stiff hinge transfers stress to the casting and risks cracking on a long-stored vintage iron. A drop of food-grade lubricant on the pin restores easy swing.
Search on AmazonMost-recommended re-seasoning oil — polymerizes into a hard, durable surface unlike the gummy buildup vegetable oils can leave. 6-coat re-season takes a Saturday but lasts years.
