Interwar Peak (1918–1945) · Waffle Iron
Used price$110–$220live on eBay
Wagner's No. 8 stovetop waffle irons are two hinged paddles turning in a base ring that sits over a stove-lid opening, often with wire coil handles. Most marked examples carry a 1910 or a September 1925 patent date, and many later ones are marked 1408. Irons with square bodies on a high base, from the 1910 patent, are the collector variant and ask the most. Treat it as a three-part purchase: two paddles marked Wagner No. 8 with the same patent date, a hinge that closes the paddles flat without play, and the original base. Ask for photos of both inside faces, the hinge and the base. Check each paddle and the base ring for cracks, check whether the hinge is seized with rust, and look at the handles — wire coils are often stretched or replaced. Irons sold as paddles only are worth about a third less. Wagner also made aluminum waffle irons, which come up in the same search.
Common defects to inspect
Missing base; paddles with different patent dates; cracked paddle or base ring; seized or sloppy hinge; damaged or replaced handles; aluminum irons mixed into searches
Note: Most complete irons ask about $110–220 delivered; square-bodied 1910 irons on a high base ask $300 and up.
How to identify a real Wagner Ware
Stylized Wagner Ware Sidney -O- logo on the bottom with a four-digit catalog number (1058 on the No. 8 skillet, 1059 on the No. 9) and a mold letter; earlier pans show a plain WAGNER or Wagner Ware mark with SIDNEY O. and a size number. Later pieces read Wagner Ware with MADE IN USA. Magnalite pieces are aluminum, not iron.
Buying guide
From Oct 1, 2026 listings
35 Wagner No. 8 cast-iron waffle irons were listed at the late-September check, most asking about $110–220 delivered; three have since gone, including the cheapest auction and a refurbished 1408. Nearly all are 1910- and 1925-patent stovetop irons (many marked 1408): two paddles on a low or high ring base, often with coil handles. Treat it as a three-part buy: both halves marked Wagner No. 8 with the same patent date, a hinge that closes flat without play, and the original base. Paddles-only irons are worth about a third less, single paddles sold as parts were left out, and aluminum irons (pattern 828) also turn up. Square-bodied 1910 irons on a high base are the collector variant at $300 and up; cooks should buy a complete low-base 1408.

The lowest total on a complete iron, a 1925-patent 1408 with its low base and coil handle, about $140 delivered with Best Offer from a 100% seller. The only cheaper listing here is a pair of paddles without a base; ask whether the hinge swings freely.

For the waffle-iron hinge pivot — a stiff hinge transfers stress to the casting and risks cracking on a long-stored vintage iron. A drop of food-grade lubricant on the pin restores easy swing.
