Interwar Peak (1918–1945) · Griddle
Used price$110–$190live on eBay
The Griswold No. 9 handle griddle is a round, nearly flat griddle about 11 inches across, with a low rim and a skillet-style handle, weighing a little over 4 pounds. It carries pattern number 609 and turns up in both large block logo (about 1920–1940) and small block logo (about 1939–1957) versions; the large-logo bottoms are fully lettered and usually ask a little more. With almost no sidewall, a griddle shows warp more readily than a skillet, so the flatness check is the main one: ask for a photo of it lying on a flat counter, and look for any gap under the edge or a centre that spins. Then check the low rim for chips — a missing chunk can't be restored — look for hairline cracks running in from the edge, and inspect the bottom for pitting around the logo. Don't confuse it with the No. 8 griddle (608) or Griswold's long two-burner griddles that appear in the same searches.
Common defects to inspect
Warp or spin; chips or missing chunks from the low rim; hairline cracks from the edge; pitting; other Griswold griddle sizes in the same search
Note: Most listings ask about $110–190 delivered; fully restored ones run about $145–200, and as-is pans can be found near $60.
How to identify a real Griswold
Erie-era pieces carry the Griswold cross-in-double-circle with ERIE, PA (U.S.A.) — large block logo pans fill much of the bottom, small block logo pans have a small stamp near the centre — or, before about 1907, just ERIE and a size number. A pattern number (for example 704 on a No. 8 skillet) usually sits near the handle, often with a mold letter. Griswold-branded pieces without ERIE in the mark were generally made in Sidney, Ohio, after 1957. Reproductions tend to show rough, unmilled surfaces and blurred lettering.

17 Griswold No. 9 handle griddles (pattern 609) were listed at the late-September check, most at about $110–190 delivered; a large-block 609B near $110 has since sold. Large-block-logo griddles usually ask more than small-logo ones. Warp matters most on a griddle: ask for a photo of it lying on a flat counter, and check the low rim for chips. Restored small-logo ones run about $145–158; an as-is 609 is $60 with free shipping, and one listing has a chunk missing, which no restoration fixes. An unmarked No. 9 griddle the seller only guesses is Griswold was left out. Cooks should take a restored one; collectors, a large-block griddle.
