Interwar Peak (1918–1945) · Skillet
Used price$80–$120live on eBay
Vollrath of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, is best known for enamelware, but it also made a line of plain cast iron skillets. The No. 8 is about 10¼ inches across. Fully marked pans read VOLLRATH WARE with the size number and are generally dated up to about the 1940s; Vollrath's marks are often oriented sideways, at 90 degrees to where other makers put them. Later unmarked pans are recognised by the handle — a teardrop-shaped end with a raised hump on top and a long reinforcing rib underneath — and many Vollrath skillets have an outside heat ring. Collectors describe Vollrath castings as comparatively light, so warp is the main risk: ask whether it sits flat, because a warp won't come back. Also check for hairline cracks from the rim and near the handle, and pitting. Unmarked pans attributed to Vollrath by the seller can't be confirmed from photos alone unless the handle features match.
Common defects to inspect
Warp; hairline cracks; pitting; unmarked pans attributed to Vollrath without matching handle features; marks softened by blasting
Note: Most listings ask about $80–120 delivered; asks near $200 or more are about twice the usual price.
How to identify a real Vollrath
VOLLRATH WARE with a size number on the bottom, often oriented sideways (90 degrees from where other makers placed marks). Unmarked pans are identified by the handle: a teardrop-shaped end with a raised hump on top and a long reinforcing rib underneath; many skillets have an outside heat ring. Enameled pieces should show no chips through to bare iron.
Buying guide
From Oct 1, 2026 listings
13 Vollrath No. 8 skillets were listed at the late-September check, most at about $80–120 delivered, and most already restored; one restored pan that sat flat has since sold. Look for VOLLRATH WARE and the size on the bottom (the number is often turned sideways) and the teardrop handle with a hump and a long rib; two listings here are unmarked and attributed only by the seller. Restored pans cluster at $83–85 delivered, so cleaning adds little. Vollrath castings are light and thin, so ask whether it sits flat. A fully marked pan asks about $194 and another restored pan about $290. Cooks should take a restored, flat-listed pan; the fully marked one is for collectors.

$40 with free shipping and Best Offer from a 100% seller, half the low end of the band. The bare title gives no condition or mark, so ask for photos of the bottom marking, the handle, the cooking surface and the pan on a flat counter.
