The Griswold No. 5 is the roughly 8 inch skillet — a one- or two-egg pan that is easy to handle with one hand. The small block logo version dates from about 1939 to 1957: look for the small cross-and-circle near the centre of the smooth bottom, "ERIE, PA." with it, and pattern number 724 (often with a mold letter such as 724 K or 724 L). It is one of the cheaper ways to own genuine Erie-made Griswold, because larger-logo No. 5s from the 1920s–30s and slant-logo pans ask noticeably more. Before buying, ask for a clear photo of the bottom — many listings don't say which logo the pan carries, and the logo drives the price. Check that it sits flat without rocking or spinning, look for hairline cracks running in from the rim, and look for pitting or the dull grey texture left by sandblasting. On small pans the marks are shallow, so heavy blasting or grinding can erase them; an unmarked 8 inch skillet cannot be proven to be a Griswold.
Common defects to inspect
Logo or pattern number softened by sandblasting; pitting; slight warp; hairline rim cracks; listings that don't state which logo is on the pan
Note: Typical asks run about $55–85 delivered; restored pans add only $10–25 over as-found ones.
How to identify a real Griswold
Erie-era pieces carry the Griswold cross-in-double-circle with ERIE, PA (U.S.A.) — large block logo pans fill much of the bottom, small block logo pans have a small stamp near the centre — or, before about 1907, just ERIE and a size number. A pattern number (for example 704 on a No. 8 skillet) usually sits near the handle, often with a mold letter. Griswold-branded pieces without ERIE in the mark were generally made in Sidney, Ohio, after 1957. Reproductions tend to show rough, unmilled surfaces and blurred lettering.
Buying guide
From Oct 1, 2026 listings
17 small-logo No. 5s were listed at the late-September check, most at $55–85 delivered. Look for the small cross-and-circle and pattern 724 on the bottom: about a dozen more No. 5s in the search were large-block or slant-logo pans asking roughly $100–250, and several others don't say which logo they have. Restored pans run from $49 to $93 here, overlapping as-found ones, so pay for a confirmed 724 and a flat bottom, not for the word restored. Ask for a photo of the bottom and whether it sits flat without spinning. One small-logo pan asks about $126 with no stated reason.

A restored small-block No. 5 at about $49 delivered with Best Offer from a 100% seller, the lowest total here and already cleaned. The title doesn't give the 724 pattern number, so ask for a photo of the bottom before you offer.

Priced high: about $126 delivered with nothing in the title to explain the premium over a $56–87 pan.
