Interwar Peak (1918–1945) · Dutch Oven
Used price$120–$220live on eBay
Griswold's Tite-Top Dutch oven came in several sizes; the No. 8 (roughly 5 quarts) is the one most often listed. Two generations matter. The earlier "Tite-Top Baster" bodies carry pattern 833 and a March 1920 patent date, from the large block logo years; later bodies carry pattern 1278 and run through the small-logo era to the end of Erie production. The matching lid is pattern 2551, with raised Griswold Tite-Top lettering on top. The lid is where the value is: it should carry the Griswold name and the matching pattern number, sit snugly in the body's lid ledge, and not rock. Ask for photos of the lid underside, the body bottom and the bail. Then check for cracks in the bottom and around the bail ears, chips in the rim or lid ledge, pitting, and a warped bottom. Enameled Tite-Tops and bodies sold without lids are worth considerably less than a matched bare-iron pair.
Common defects to inspect
Missing or non-matching lid; lid that rocks or doesn't seat in the lid ledge; cracks at the bail ears or bottom; rim and lid-ledge chips; pitting; enameled examples with chipped enamel
Note: Most matched sets ask about $120–220 delivered; earlier 833 Tite-Top Baster sets ask more, around $185–245.
How to identify a real Griswold
Erie-era pieces carry the Griswold cross-in-double-circle with ERIE, PA (U.S.A.) — large block logo pans fill much of the bottom, small block logo pans have a small stamp near the centre — or, before about 1907, just ERIE and a size number. A pattern number (for example 704 on a No. 8 skillet) usually sits near the handle, often with a mold letter. Griswold-branded pieces without ERIE in the mark were generally made in Sidney, Ohio, after 1957. Reproductions tend to show rough, unmilled surfaces and blurred lettering.

From Oct 1, 2026 listings
11 Griswold No. 8 Tite-Tops are listed, most at $120–220 delivered. The lid decides the value: it should carry the same Erie PA cross-and-circle as the base and seat without rocking, so ask for photos of the lid underside and the base bottom before you bid. One listing is the base only and one is enameled, and both are worth less than a matched bare-iron pair. The earlier 833 Tite-Top Basters from the large-logo years ask more, about $184–244. At about 11½ pounds, shipping runs $10–44, so compare totals. Cooks should start with the 1278C; collectors with the 833A baster.

About $87 delivered, Buy It Now, from a 99.3% seller, the lowest total, but it's enameled red and white, which collectors value less than bare iron. Fine for cooking if the enamel is intact; ask for close photos of the interior and rim, and confirm the lid is included.

A 1278C, the standard No. 8 Tite-Top pattern, about $107 delivered, Buy It Now, from a 99.7% seller, under the $120–220 band. Nearly $37 of that is shipping; confirm the lid is included and carries the matching Erie PA mark.

A large-logo Tite-Top Baster, pattern 833A, dated 1920 by the seller, about $184 delivered with Best Offer from a 99.5% seller. The baster is the earlier design and this is the cheaper of the two listed; ask for photos of the lid's underside and the base mark.
